Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Bootcamp
Are you aged between 12-25? Do want to join the global youth-led fight against disasters? If you answered yes to both of these questions, this DRR Bootcamp is for you!
The children and youth of today are growing up in an era of ever-increasing disaster risks. Recent disasters, such as the 2019/2020 Black Summer bushfires and the COVID-19 pandemic, have shown us that if we want Australia to be a safe and sustainable place for current and future generations, we have a lot of work to do.
Taking place in the July school holidays, our DRR Bootcamp will provide you with the knowledge and skills you need to take meaningful action on disaster prevention, preparedness, response and recovery.
The DRR Bootcamp is completely free of charge. The only thing you need to participate is an ipad or computer with a stable internet connection.
The Bootcamp involves three core sessions:
Monday 5th July 10:00 -12:00
Session 1 will provide students with understanding of the causes and consequences of disasters and the important role that children and youth can play in reducing disaster risks in their households, schools and communities.
Tuesday 6th July 10:00 -12:00
Session 2 will provide students with the knowledge and skills they need to assess disaster risk and evaluate the effectiveness of existing DRR strategies. Students will also be supported to identify a real-world problem they are passionate about solving.
Wednesday 7th July 10:00 -12:00
Session 3 will involve students designing a DRR social action project, either individually or in small groups. Students will be supported to define their project objectives and activities. They will also design strategies for evaluating the outcomes and impacts of their projects over time.
Once you have completed these three core sessions, you will have the option of pitching your project idea to a panel of international DRR researchers, practitioners and policy makers! This Pitch to the Pros session, to be held on Wed 21st July 18.30 - 20:00, will provide you with an opportunity to receive valuable feedback and advice to help make your project a success.
